Be essential. Be a teacher.

One degree, Two careers...

GeauxTeach Offers Infinite Possibilities

Quality math and science teachers are in high demand. GeauxTeach STEM allows students to pursue an undergraduate degree in biology, chemistry, mathematics, or physics AND earn secondary teaching certification at the same time. No additional hours are required since elective hours are used for education courses. Upon completing the GeauxTeach STEM program, you will have a BS degree in science or math AND be both certified and highly qualified to teach in that subject area. Although teaching is the goal for many of our students, some choose to pursue this concentration to become a distinguished communicator and to set themselves apart from other students who plan to enroll in graduate or professional schools.

Getting Started

Freshmen and Sophomores can try out GeauxTeach before making a commitment by enrolling in “Step 1: Inquiry Approaches to Math and Science Teaching (SCI 2010), a one-credit hour introductory course.  In this course, you will explore the world of education through theory and practice while working collaboratively to teach two lessons to elementary students in local schools.

Juniors and Seniors who are interested in trying GeauxTeach can enroll SCI 2012 (a combination of Step 1: Inquiry Approaches to Math and Science Teaching and Step 2: Inquiry-Based Math and Science Lesson Design). In this course, students explore the field of education while working collaboratively to teach three lessons to 6th, 7th, or 8th-grade students in local middle schools. Upon completion of SCI 2012 (or both SCI 2010 and SCI 2011), juniors and seniors can choose between two pathways: the GeauxTeach STEM program, which is the traditional pathway for biology, chemistry, mathematics, or physics majors earning certification at the same time as graduation, or the STEM Alternative Certification program, a new pathway designed to get students to graduation quickly prior to securing a paid post-baccalaureate internship to earn a secondary certification in a STEM field.
